Our Mission
Awareness
Raising awareness about threats to academic freedom and attempts to restrict free expression at MCCCD.
Advocacy
Standing up for the constitutional rights of students and faculty to engage in open discourse without censorship.
Action
Building a community committed to preserving civil liberties and intellectual diversity in higher education.
Why This Matters
Recent policy changes at the Maricopa Community College District threaten fundamental principles of academic freedom and free expression. These changes include:
- Restricting language and topics that can be discussed in classrooms and public forums
- Limiting faculty academic freedom to design curriculum and engage with challenging ideas
- Creating an environment where certain perspectives are silenced rather than engaged
These restrictions affect everyone in our community, undermining the core purpose of higher education: the free and open exchange of ideas in pursuit of truth.
Community Voices
"As a professor at MCCCD for over 10 years, I've seen how free and open discourse helps students develop critical thinking skills. When we limit what can be discussed, we limit learning."
— Professor from Phoenix College"The freedom to explore diverse perspectives was crucial to my education. Every student deserves the opportunity to engage with challenging ideas in a supportive environment."
